As emerging adults, we are surrounded by pressure to find a significant other. Some of us have found that special someone, but many of us are still looking. Being single is a time that many men and women use to focus on themselves. And while getting to know yourself can be important, being single can be useful for a more important purpose: to focus on God.
One obvious reason that being single is helpful in growing closer to God is that it provides at least one less temptation. A recent article, written by Joey Mielke, entitled “A Different Perspective,” spoke to the changing hormones and emotions that come with growing up, which I think we can all relate to. Simply put, sex is a temptation which may be more easily avoided when you are not in a relationship.
Your life is not any less relevant because you do not have a significant other to share it with
The second reason that being single can be helpful as a Christian I found to be very true when my “relationship status” changed to single my freshman year of college. Being the flawed human being that I am, I complain a lot. Without that constant boyfriend to complain to, I remembered to talk to God more. And talking to Him reminded me that I actually have so much more to be thankful for than to whine about, especially since He sent His Son to die for us. Being single, my prayers became more prayers of thanks than prayers of appeal.
To those of you who are single, I urge you to make the best of this time. Your life is not any less relevant because you do not have a significant other to share it with. To those of you in relationships, remember that what you feel for each other is not the most important thing. Rather, the most important thing is what you can do to bring each other closer to God; because while using your time alone is incredibly valuable in strengthening your faith, so is sharing that journey with somebody else.
“Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.” -1 Corinthians 7:17
